  1. Young Adult- The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. The Hate U Give focuses on themes of racism, racial inequality, and what it is like growing up as a black person in society today. It tackles hard hitting topics and is very current for our world right now. It was also a #1 New York Times Bestseller.

  2. Biography- Born A Crime: Trevor Noah by Trevor Noah. In Born A Crime: Trevor Noah, South African comedian and current host of The Daily Show Trevor Noah recalls stories of his childhood to portray the effects of apartheid on his life. Noah is mixed, which caused a lot of trouble growing up but his use of comedy allows the audience to learn and laugh about stories resulting from racial oppression. Published in 2016, it was received very favorably and was a #1 New York Times Bestseller.

  3. Fantasy- Before She Ignites (Fallen Isles #1) by Jodi Meadows. Mira Minkoba is a perfect girl in everyone else’s eyes, until she discovers an explosive secret that challenges everything she stands for and gets her landed in prison. With her dragons by her side, fighting to survive against outer threats and inner demons of mental illness, Mira must find her inner fire and the scorching truth about her own endangered magic—before her very world collapses. And that's all before she ignites. First book in the Fallen Isles trilogy.

  4. Sci Fi- Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines, puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win—and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape.

  5. Mystery- Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell. A 15 year old girl from a perfect family with perfect grades and a perfect relationship goes missing. 10 years later, her mom is still trying to get her life together after her daughter disappeared and she later got divorced. A few months after there was a new clue in the case, she meets a charming man at a cafe and they form a relationship. When she meets his children, she is blown away by the resemblance between one of his children and her daughter. Will she be able to solve this mystery?

  6. Chick Lit/Romance- Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell. Eleanor is the new girl in town, and with her chaotic family life, her mismatched clothes and unruly red hair, she couldn't stick out more if she tried. Park is the boy at the back of the bus. Black T-shirts, headphones, head in a book - he thinks he's made himself invisible. But not to Eleanor. In a turn of events they would have never expected, slowly, Eleanor and Park fall for each other.

  7. Dystopian- The Selection by Kiera Cass. In honor of the Selection being made into a movie on Netflix, read the book this summer before it comes out! America Singer is an average sixteen-year-old girl—or as average as you can be in the country of Illéa, which was formed out of the remnants of the United States following World War III. When their prince needs a bride, and any girls in the kingdom can compete for a chance to live amongst the wealthy, where a rebellion is brewing- the Selection is born. For thirty-five impoverished girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering crowns and priceless jewels.

  8. Poetry- Blue Lipstick: Concrete Poems by John Grandits. A 15-year-old girl named Jessie voices typical—and not so typical—teenage concerns in this unique, hilarious collection of poems. Her musings about trying out new makeup and hairstyles, playing volleyball and cello, and dealing with her annoying younger brother are never boring or predictable.

  9. Self Help- Gmorning, Gnight! Little pep talks for Me & You by Lin-Manuel Miranda- From the creator of Hamilton comes a book filled with daily affirmations or “little pep talks” that can inspire you in many ways. Read one every morning and watch your life change for the better.

  10. Horror/Thriller- The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson. The day that Louisiana teenager Rory Deveaux arrives in London to start a new life at boarding school is also the day a series of brutal murders breaks out over the city, killings mimicking the horrific Jack the Ripper spree of more than a century ago. Rory spotted the man police believe to be the prime suspect. But she is the only one who saw him–the only one who can see him. And now Rory has become his next target. But Rory has gained an ability in her time in London–and this ability will change the direction of her life as she knows it.
